Shared hosting is great for 90% of sites — it is a building with many tenants sharing power and water. Sometimes your business grows and you need your own house. Here is how to tell.
The five signs
- 1. The site falls over at peak — perfect at 3am, an error during a campaign or Black Friday. That is a limit on concurrent processes, not disk.
- 2. Slow at the same time every day — typical when you share a server with a heavy neighbour
- 3. You optimised every image and cache — and it is still slow — if you did all the optimisation steps, the server is what is left
- 4. A store with many products and visits — WooCommerce with thousands of products eats CPU, especially on search and filtering
- 5. You need something specific — your own PHP configuration, special software, more memory, a cron every minute
What you are actually short of (not disk)
- Entry processes — how many visitors get served AT THE SAME TIME. Reason number one for peak failures.
- CPU and RAM — how much the site can compute at once
- Inodes — the number of files (mail and cache fill these up)
What a VPS gives you
- Guaranteed resources just for you — no neighbour dragging you down
- Your own configuration and more control
- Easier scaling as you grow
Honestly: when you do NOT need a VPS
- The site is slow due to 5MB images and 30 plugins — a VPS will make a slow site on a faster server. Optimise first.
- You have 200 visits a month — then it is cost without reason
- Nobody will manage it — a VPS needs management (or a managed plan)
How to check
In cPanel → Resource Usage you can see whether and how often you hit the limits. Regular red there is your answer — not a guess.
With us: if you think it is tight, we will look at the numbers with you and tell you honestly whether you need a VPS or just optimisation. We do not sell a bigger plan you do not need.
