The most expensive loss in online sales is not the visitor who left — it is the one who filled a cart and did not finish. They already wanted to buy. Something stopped them.
Why they abandon (in order)
- 1. A surprise cost — shipping appearing at the last step. Reason number one worldwide.
- 2. Forced account creation — just to buy once
- 3. A long process — 5 screens and 20 fields
- 4. They do not trust the payment — no SSL sign, no terms, looks improvised
- 5. They were just browsing — the cart is a wishlist (that is normal)
- 6. A technical error — a payment failure nobody noticed
First fix the causes
- Show shipping cost early — on the product page or in the cart, not at the end
- Guest checkout — an account is an option, not a condition
- Shorten it — only the fields you need to deliver
- Trust signals — SSL, payment methods, the returns policy next to the button, a phone number
- Test on mobile — that is where most abandon
Then — win them back
WooCommerce with an abandoned cart plugin remembers emails entered before drop-off and sends automatic reminders:
- Email 1 (after 1 hour): a reminder only — no discount
- Email 2 (after 24 hours): help — any questions about delivery or payment?
- Email 3 (after 3 days): if you must — a small discount with a deadline
Careful: do not discount immediately. If everyone who pauses gets 10%, you teach buyers to pause.
Legally
You need a basis to send these: a consent box or clear notice that you will contact them.
What it is worth
With 100 abandoned carts a month at a decent average, that is real money in play. Recovering even 10% is monthly income from automation that works while you sleep.
And remember: fix the causes first. Emails recover a share; a good checkout prevents the loss.
