Gutenberg (the default editor) works with blocks: every paragraph, image or heading is its own block you add, move and delete. It looks confusing for ten minutes, then it is easier than Word. Here are the ten you need.
The ten blocks
- Paragraph — plain text; created automatically when you press Enter
- Heading — H2 for main sections, H3 for sub-sections (H1 is the post title, do not use it in the text)
- Image — one image with a caption
- List — bullets or numbers; makes text readable
- Quote — for a client testimonial or a key thought
- Button — a CTA; do not forget the link
- Gallery — several images in a grid
- Columns — text left, image right (watch how it looks on mobile!)
- Table — for prices and comparisons
- Separator / Spacer — air between sections; a page without air is hard to read
The time-saving trick
Instead of hunting for a block in the list: type / and the start of its name (/image) → it appears instantly. This makes you three times faster.
Three more useful things
- Moving — the arrows to the left of a block, or grab the six dots and drag
- Duplicating — the three dots → Duplicate (great for repeating sections)
- List view — the icon top left shows the whole structure; a lifesaver in long posts
If it feels cluttered
In settings turn off the tips and switch to fullscreen — the editor becomes calm and clean.
When you need more
For complex layouts there are builders (Elementor and similar) — but for blog posts Gutenberg is enough, faster and easier to maintain. Fewer plugins means a faster site.
