Scheduling, revisions and authors — WordPress blog tricks

Three features every WordPress has and almost nobody uses — and they are exactly what makes a blog sustainable.

1. Scheduling (the most useful)

Instead of publishing whenever you get around to it, write 4-5 posts at once and schedule them. In the editor: Publish → Immediately → pick a date and time → the button becomes Schedule. The post goes out by itself.

Why it matters: regularity is a signal to Google and to readers. Four posts a month, every Tuesday, beat ten posts in a day followed by three months of silence.

2. Revisions (a time machine)

WordPress remembers every saved version. Right sidebar → Revisions → you see the changes (old left, new right) and restore an earlier version with one button. A lifesaver when someone deletes a paragraph or improves something that was better before.

With several authors, revisions also show WHO changed what.

3. Roles (who may do what)

  • Administrator — can do everything, including break the site. Only you (and us).
  • Editor — publishes and edits all content
  • Author — writes and publishes ONLY their own posts
  • Contributor — writes but cannot publish (awaits approval) — ideal for an intern or external writer
  • Subscriber — reads and comments only

Rule: give the smallest role possible. An admin account for someone who only writes is a needless risk.

Bonus: drafts and preview links

Save as draft and send a preview link (Preview → copy link) — a colleague sees the post before it goes live, with no admin access.

The rhythm that works

One day a month: write four posts, schedule them for every Tuesday. Done — the blog runs, you stop thinking about it.
